Achievements

Historically, SSM activities have served the seniors of Saskatchewan while attempting not to overlap with the programs or services provided by member organizations. Centennial-license-plate-sm

Recent SSM accomplishments include:

  • Celebrating Seniors
  • Targeted Initiative for Older Workers
  • Recreation Information for Positive Participation
  • Seniors Friendship Program
  • Book entitled “Saskatchewan Remembers Then and Now”, an anthology of Saskatchewan War Veterans
  • Annual Conferences, including hosting a National Conference in conjunction with ALCOA in 2002
  • Establishing the Saskatchewan Older Adult Employment Bureau;
  • Protocol for Elder Abuse
  • Comprehensive manual on “What to Do” to support professionals, community workers, families, and interested persons in addressing the needs of abused older adults
  • Speakers Bureau
  • Fit for Your Life program   
    -Leader Training programs in various Health Districts throughout the province;
    -Program delivers training to individuals on proper exercise, weight lifting programs, proper diet and fun.
  • Senior Friendly program:
    -Approaches business community to help them make their facilities more accessible and accommodating to seniors;
    -Senior Friendly is an attitude – based on respect for all community members.
  • Century Club:
    -Formed to honour seniors who have reached the age of 90 and who are determined to continue living in as full and active a life style as possible to the age of 100 and beyond
    -A network of friendship and mutual support
  • ABCs of Fraud program:
    -Program designed to help seniors recognize frauds and scams;
    -Trains volunteers to do informative skits
  • Partnership with Lifeline – a personal response service

In earlier years, these activities included such things as:

  • Vision Sessions and follow-ups
  • Meeting with Cabinet on Delegation Days, and with other Government Ministers on specific topics
  • Communications:
    -Gray Matters newsletter – used to be 15,000 copies;
    -Resource Centre – reports, pamphlets about various provincial seniors services;
    -Briefs to various Commissions: Pension reform, Bill C-91, Post Office closures, Social reorm, Home care in SK
    -Presentations about such things as: Care Givers, Health districts, Drug Plan, Sources of information about seniors services, Active Living
  • Representatives on Advisory Committees:
    -Justice
    -CMHC
    -Literacy
  • Elder Abuse:
    -Tenants Act
    -Scams
  • SGI Aging Driver Booklet
  • Organized Seniors Forums
  • Position statements on various issues, including:
    -Health Care
    -Housing
    -Transportation
    -Income Security
  • Individualized Funding project for persons with disabilities
  • Research projects
  • Seniors Hotline – 1 -800 number to offer information about services
  • Seniors Friendship Program 2008- funded by New Horizons for Seniors Program
    -object of the pilot project was to reduce isolation of seniors through visitation and involvement with other seniors
    -Regina Catholic Family Services under the Four Leaf Clover program is continuing this program in Regina
